Food handler vs food manager: which certificate do you need?

A food handler card shows a worker took food safety training. A food manager certification (CFPM, Certified Food Protection Manager) shows the person running the shift passed an accredited exam. The FDA Food Code treats them as separate requirements, and neither one replaces the other.

Which one is yours

Line cook, server, barista, dishwasher: the handler card, wherever your state or county requires one. NEHA's version is the Professional Food Handler certificate; the job-by-job breakdown of who needs a card covers the rest of the crew.

Shift lead or kitchen manager: ask whether you're the certified manager the operation needs. That is an exam with its own prep, and a handler course doesn't prepare you for it.

The two can overlap. New Mexico exempts certified food protection managers from its handler card (New Mexico Environment Department, as of October 2026). Both sides also lean on accreditation by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board), so it helps to know what an ANAB-accredited food handler card actually is.

Which certificate, which person

Can a food handler card replace a food manager certificate?

No. The Food Code asks the person in charge to show knowledge, for example by passing an accredited exam (2-102.11(B)). A handler course is training, a different requirement.

Can a manager certificate replace the handler card?

In some places. New Mexico exempts certified food protection managers from its card rule (NMED, as of October 2026). Elsewhere, check the state.

Is ServSafe Manager a food handler card?

No. ServSafe Manager is a manager-level exam. ServSafe sells a separate Food Handler course for front-line staff.

Does NEHA give the manager exam itself?

No. NEHA's manager page points to the exam taken remotely for $80.00 through NRFSP (NEHA PFM page, as of October 2026).
