What is the NEHA Professional Food Handler (PFH) certificate?

It's the food handler certificate from NEHA, the National Environmental Health Association: a two-hour online course in seven modules, with an assessment at the end. Pass it and you print a certificate. It's built for frontline food workers. It isn't a manager certification, and it gives you no letters to put after your name.

NEHA PFH course

2hours · 7 modules

The Professional Food Handler (PFH) certificate is NEHA's food handler course for frontline workers: two hours, seven modules, and an online assessment. As of October 2026, NEHA says it is accredited by ANAB (the ANSI National Accreditation Board, part of the American National Standards Institute) and based on the 2022 FDA Food Code.

What it is, and what it isn't

A course with a test inside
You buy one package. NEHA's store lists the online assessment as included with the course (as of October 2026), and NEHA's own page calls that assessment the exam.
A food handler credential
It's for the people who prep, cook, plate, serve and wash. The person in charge of a shift falls under a different rule in the FDA Food Code: a certified food protection manager, who passes a separate, longer exam. The split is laid out in food handler vs food manager certification.
Not a title
NEHA's online course handbook says there are no acronyms or other marks associated with the certificate. You hold a NEHA Professional Food Handler certificate; you don't sign emails as “PFH.”
Not tied to one state
NEHA sells the online course as non-state specific. Whether it counts where you work is your state's or county's call, and some say no.

What's inside the two hours

NEHA's store page names five topic areas: foodborne illness and contamination; receiving, storing, preparing and serving food; personal hygiene; cleaning and sanitizing; and pest prevention. That's the whole kitchen, from the back door where deliveries land to the dish pit.

The course is self-paced with no deadline to finish, in English or Spanish, per NEHA's online course handbook as of October 2026. The same handbook lists a browser such as Chrome, Firefox or Edge, working audio, and a screen of at least 1024 × 768. Plan on a laptop or a desktop and a pair of earbuds.

The assessment comes last. You need 70% to pass, and the online version gives you one attempt per purchase. What a miss costs, and what to do about it, is on the PFH passing score and retakes page.

Online or in a classroom

NEHA also has Food Safety Instructors who teach the program in person. NEHA's instructor handbook calls it a minimum 2-hour program, priced by the instructor within any cap in state law (as of October 2026).

Where it counts, and where it doesn't

ANAB lists NEHA as an accredited issuer of food handler certificates, ID 1031, as of October 2026. That listing matters in places whose rules ask for an ANSI- or ANAB-accredited course, California and Texas among them. What ANAB accreditation means covers how to check it and which states lean on it.

Some places run their own card and won't take this one. Washington's Department of Health says its only authorized online training is foodworkercard.wa.gov; Oregon takes cards only from Oregon Health Authority-approved providers; Utah's approved-provider list doesn't include NEHA; and the Southern Nevada Health District gives its own in-person test. All as of October 2026. Check the rule where you work before you pay. How to get a food handlers card walks you through that order.

What NEHA's certificate covers

Is the PFH an exam or a training course?

A course with the exam built in. You work through the modules, then take the online summative assessment. NEHA's store prices the online course at $15.00 in English or Spanish, assessment included (NEHA store, as of October 2026).

Can I put PFH after my name on a résumé?

NEHA says no: its online course handbook states there are no acronyms or other marks associated with the certificate (as of October 2026). Write the full name, “NEHA Professional Food Handler certificate,” and the date you passed.

Does NEHA offer a food safety certification for managers?

Yes, as a separate track. NEHA's Professional Food Manager page prepares you for a manager exam delivered through NRFSP (National Registry of Food Safety Professionals), listed at $80.00 to take remotely as of October 2026. A food handler certificate doesn't stand in for it.

How long is the NEHA certificate good for?

Three years from the day you pass, per NEHA's online course handbook (as of October 2026). A local rule can set a different term, and then the local rule wins; see how long a food handlers card is valid.
