New Mexico wants an accredited card, with a few exemptions

Outside Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, which run their own food safety programs, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) requires a food handler card from an accredited training program for anyone who handles food, utensils or food-contact surfaces, unless an exemption covers them (as of October 2026).

The rule without the legalese

NMED asks the question on its own page and answers it in one sentence: if you handle food, utensils or food-contact surfaces and no exemption fits you, you need a card obtained through an accredited food handler training program (NMED food handler training, as of October 2026). The same page says NMED's food program has no jurisdiction in Bernalillo County and Albuquerque. Working there? Ask the city or county program; we haven't read their rules.

In the state's food rule, accredited points to accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under the ASTM E2659 standard. PFH counts here: the Professional Food Handler (PFH) course from the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) carries ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accreditation, and New Mexico is one of the state scopes where ANAB lists NEHA. More: ANAB-accredited food handler cards.

Exemptions are narrow. If you're plating, prepping or pouring, plan on a card. Comparing with a neighboring state? Food handler card rules by state has them side by side.

Who's exempt in New Mexico

You're a certified food manager
A current Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification covers you.
You never touch temperature-controlled food
That's TCS food (time/temperature control for safety): food that needs temperature control to stay safe. Never touch it, no card.
You handle food only now and then
NMED's examples: restaurant hosts, teachers helping with family-style dining, nurses or therapists helping patients.
You're working a temporary event
The person in charge of the event still needs a card or a CFPM.
Your employer runs an NMED-approved program
Then the employer's own training is your route.

NMED's rule, in short

New Mexico (NMED jurisdiction)Card through an accredited food handler training program, unless exemptNot stated on NMED's page; ask your employer—NMED

Albuquerque and Bernalillo County run their own food safety programs and aren't covered by this row. Exempt workers still get basic food safety training from the facility, which keeps a record of it.

What to keep once you pass

  • The printed certificate. NEHA's downloads after you pass and carries a secure QR code (NEHA policies, as of October 2026).
  • The pass date. NEHA's term is three years from that day, but local rules win where they differ. Details: how long a food handler card is valid.
  • A copy for your manager.

The New Mexico fine print

NM food handlers permit or card: which one do I need?

They're the same thing. NMED says food handler card; searches say permit, license or certificate. The requirement behind all of them is one card from an accredited program.

I work in Albuquerque. Does this page apply?

Not directly. NMED says it has no food safety jurisdiction in Bernalillo County and Albuquerque, which run their own programs (as of October 2026). Ask the city or county program what they require.

Do New Mexico courses run online?

Accredited providers sell online courses. NEHA's costs $15 in English or Spanish with the assessment included (NEHA store).

I work as a host. Do I need one?

NMED names restaurant hosts as an example of occasional food handling, which is exempt. Your employer still owes you basic food safety training and a record of it.

How long is a New Mexico food handler card good for?

NMED's page doesn't put a number on it, so we don't either. NEHA's certificate term is three years from the pass date (NEHA handbook). Ask your manager whether anything shorter applies.
