Which courses count for a Utah food handlers permit?

Utah's approved-provider list decides it. Cards from providers not on the list, updated March 26, 2026, won't be accepted by local health departments toward the food handler permit. The National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) isn't on it, so its Professional Food Handler (PFH) certificate won't get you a Utah permit (as of October 2026).

How Utah does it

Utah approves food handler training providers under rule R392-103 and keeps a list of them. The list carries a blunt line: cards or certificates from sources not on it won't be accepted by local health departments toward the required food handler permit (Utah approved-provider list, updated 03/26/2026).

The list has trainer-led classes, several of them run by local health departments, and private providers, ServSafe-Utah among them. NEHA isn't on it. That settles the PFH question for Utah.

Providers get added as they're approved, so open the current list before you open your wallet. The wider picture across states: food handler card rules by state.

What our practice is for in Utah

This site issues nothing: no card, no permit. The free practice test and the study guide drill the food safety itself, like the danger zone (41–135°F), a 20-second handwash, and when a sick worker stays home (U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code 2022). Learn it here, then sit the test with a Utah-approved provider.

The general steps for any state are on how to get a food handler card.

Before you call the health department

Will NEHA's PFH get me a Utah food handlers permit?

No. NEHA isn't on Utah's approved-provider list updated March 26, 2026, and the list says cards from sources not on it won't be accepted (as of October 2026).

How do I renew my Utah food handlers permit?

The provider list doesn't spell out a renewal term, so we don't quote one. Ask your local health department, and see renewing a food handler card for how renewal works in general.

Salt Lake County, Utah County, Weber-Morgan: does my county matter?

The approved list is the state's, and local health departments are the ones accepting the training toward the permit; some of them teach approved classes too. For anything county-specific, such as class times, fees or a permit lookup, call your local health department.

Where do I find a cheap or free Utah food handlers permit?

Prices aren't on the state list and we haven't verified providers' prices, so no numbers from us. Compare approved providers directly.
